Ibsen: Ghosts

Markus&Markus

In Ibsen’s play “Ghosts”, Osvald asks his mother to help him to die. And with her, all over the world societies have doubts if there is a human right to self-determined dying.
Markus&Markus met their Osvald, 81 years old Margot, on April 1 in 2014 and stayed with her during her last days, when she organized her affairs, and on her way to Switzerland. To a place, where a few organizations are allowed to practice euthanasia since a few years, on the fine line left by jurisdiction. Margot was buried on May 22, 2014.
The young theater makers are aiming high with their work and they don’t care about conventions – but as radical as they follow their own path, they are often irritated, touched or even wounded on the way. The role of the fool, which they play with passion, provides protection from too much emotion as well as the possibility to confess to weaknesses. “Ibsen: Ghosts” is a sad celebration of life, where the hostess already followed her deceased friends.
Markus&Markus don’t provide a solution to this dilemma, they add more: What should be shown in the theater, how true, how close, how serious can it be? Are we voyeurs or witnesses? About what shouldn’t we talk? Should we keep quiet? In the end, everything is theater and nothing is theater. Markus&Markus erect a memorial in the honor of a person they and we didn’t even know before. A memorial we won’t forget so easily.
