Eighty-four years. That’s how old Gertraud Stock is, a usually unusual woman. Eighty-four years in which society, the country, the world have changed. Eighty-four years full of decisions, non-decisions, coincidences, doubts and convictions. What has it meant over the years and what does it mean today to be a woman and now to be old?
In an installational arrangement the young company vorschlag:hammer constructs a life on the basis of interviews, photos and personal records – both autobiographical and freely invented.
What roles has Gertraud Stock played in the course of her life? What role is she playing now, at the end of her life? How do time and memory structure a biography – and how can those structures be undermined? What does it feel like to be old? Can you rehearse dying? “There are things you can’t imagine and that you don’t want to imagine when you’re young.” – vorschlag:hammer seizes upon this worldly wisdom of Gertraud Stock, yet tries to make a picture nonetheless.
The collective founded in Hildesheim‘s unmistakable trademark is a delight in narrative in the storytelling tradition, where fact and fiction are not easily to tell apart and individual stories are inextricably interwoven with grand histories. ‘The Invention of Gertraud Stock’ creates a possible character, a possible life, and possible memories as a walk-though chamber play in Super 8.
