Noise

junges theater basel / Sebastian Nübling

However much identity, personality and relationships appear to dissolve into the virtual, one is still left with one’s own body. Sometimes a selfie is not enough to be in the world: especially when one wants to change things or make contact. Even in digital times, political and social movement – protest – always means bodies in motion: bodies in space, bodies in a collective, bodies with weight.
Inspired by such thinkers as the feminist Laurie Penny, the ‘post-internet’ artist Ryan Trecartin and accelerationist philosopher Armen Avanessian, in ‘Noise’ the director Sebastian Nübling and eight young people from junges theater basel embark on a highly physical search for free spaces, for chances to position and express themselves. Full of energy, loud and fast. Making full use of their bodies, the young people make room for themselves, constructing personal confessions and playful authenticities with smartphones, beamers and sound clouds: these are calls to be recognized as someone one might not want to be any more tomorrow, not to be reduced to something entirely superficial amid consumer society, dysfunctional family structures and the absurd pressures to perform, but to be taken seriously and not taken for a ride.
But what form of protest is possible which can go beyond criticism and lamentation? Perhaps what we need first is an old-fashioned movement: one which will get others moving too. Perhaps then neoliberalism and all its fake promises of freedom can be accelerated so much that crashes into a wall at full speed. And then there really will be room for something new.
