Launch of a video archive
of independent theater in
the German-speaking world

Archive Kick-Off

Over the course of its history, Impulse has always been a lobbyist for theater that emerges independently of the structures of state theaters in the German-speaking world. For a long time already, this theater has become a separate, artistically influential, and acclaimed division of the performing arts, and many of its productions belong to the cultural canon – but it still has to fight for its existence and for recognition, and continually has to justify its relevance anew. The archive of independent theater in the German-speaking world is meant to sharpen the consciousness of this tradition by making it possible to contextualize current works and to channel discussions and analyses. Its target group is an interested, non-professional audience, as well as artists, organizers, academic seminars, and independent theaters and festivals. It is not meant to be an expert archive, but a living and user-oriented archive.
The video archive will be launched in the framework of the Impulse Theater Biennale 2013 with a base stock made up of all the productions ever invited to the festival.

Also in the context of the festival, a first public meeting of interested partners and experts will take place, which will concretely discuss the archivability of the performing arts in general and the practical implications for the video archive of independent theater. This will form the basis for a long-term, sustainable concept.
