Revolution Vakuum

Tamer Yiğit (DE/TR) / Branka Prlić (DE)

MUSICAL-DUET WITH FILM

Commissioned work

The Moors brought the modern guitar to Spain. Mathematics, geography, medicine, astronomy, and poetry were connected by a single language: by Arabic. Already a thousand years ago, doctors from North Africa had been thinking about how to perform an eye operation. The cradle of occidental culture lay in the Orient.
Now, hundreds of years later, the Arab world is in upheaval. People are going out on the street. North Africa has its revolutions, its Arab Spring. While the western world is celebrating the events in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco, Syria is drifting into civil war. The revolutions are far from over, and the first documentaries have already been premiered in Europe, where everybody applauds the glorious fresh spring. Political hope links up with the break-up of countries from the Orient, stories from 1001 Nights, without prospects for waking up in a better present.
For more than ten years, the Berlin-based duo Tamer Yiğit und Branka Prlić have been tracing the underbelly of our present time by means of music and film, and in the theater as well. The sun is shining, but the spring isn’t real. The euphoria turns into a winter depression.
