Theater Festival Impulse in Bochum, Düsseldorf, Köln, Mülheim

Review Impulse 2007

The 14th edition of the Impulse Theatre Festival in Cologne, Bochum, Düsseldorf and Mülheim ended with the prize presentation yesterday, December 2, 2007. The first Impulse under the auspices of the new Artistic Directors Matthias von Hartz and Tom Stromberg received – with just under 8,400 visitors – rave responses with visitors and was able to almost double the attendance of the previous festival.

Impulse 2007 Preisverleihung

The prize for the best off-theatre production went to Director Ivana Müller’s WHILE WE WERE HOLDING IT TOGETHER, which was shown in the meantime at the Wiener Festwochen and at the Theatertreffen, Berlin. The Goethe Institute Prize went to two groups: Ivana Müller and Showcase Beat Le Mot for its DER RÄUBER HOTZENPLOTZ production. These two productions will be going on an international tour with the support of the Goethe Institute. The first, € 2,500 Dietmar N. Schmidt Prize for outstanding artistic performance went to Leon, the grumpy lead character in the puppet theatre version of LEON DER PROFI performed by the Berlin-based Das Helmi group.

5th Impulse Theatre Festival – apply now!
Put this into your diary: November 25 to December 6, 2009

The 15th NRW KULTURsekretariat Impulse will be taking place in Bochum, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Mülheim an der Ruhr between November 25 and December 6, 2009. As of now, outstanding non-municipal productions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland premiering between September 2007 and June 2009 can apply to participate.

Once again, Matthias von Hartz and Tom Stromberg are the Artistic Directors of the most important festival for the non-municipal German-speaking theatre scene. Matthias von Hartz and Tom Stromberg promise: “Following the successful relaunch in 2007, we are really looking forward to seeing the entire spectrum of new approaches and aesthetics in German-speaking off-theatre.” Dr. Christian Esch, Director of the NRW KULTURsekretariat, adds: “The positive response to the last festival has spurred us on to continue along this path and to further expand the festival’s international standing.”

Along with the Berliner Theatertreffen, the Impulse Theatre Festival is the most important regular theatre festival within the German-speaking world. For the last 18 years, the best non-municipal productions produced in Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet in North Rhine-Westphalia. Many of the aesthetic novelties and young talents that have revived German-speaking theatre over the past few years have previously appeared at Impulse and were discovered, and celebrated, there by the press and the theatre scene alike.
