Site-specific work and the use of found materials are among the central strategies of the independent theatre — and this is a quality that is evident again this year in designing the venues for the SHOWCASE. Students on the Master’s module in ‘Experimental Design’ as part of the Architecture course at Technische Hochschule Köln have developed modular structures for the front of house area that create a lounge atmosphere while also satisfying the changing functional needs of a festival operation: a control system, seating, tables and lighting. Their ideas have been put into practice with the university’s teaching staff and stage designer Johannes Weckl, who was responsible for designing the venues for the last two editions of the Impulse festival.
