Zwischen den Säulen
Markus&Markus don’t know what to do but they do know why. In a time full of hatred and hostility, they tell us of their journey into the world of Islam. A search for connections and things in common that will take them as far as Mecca. But is it a fairy tale or reportage?
Language: German with English surtitles
Special on 17.06. after the performance:
Audience discussion in German with the artists and Prof. Dr. Ahmad Milad Karimi, Professor of Kalām, Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism and Deputy Director of the Centre for Islamic Theology at Universität Münster. Chaired by: Christoph Rech, Leading Dramaturg, FFT Düsseldorf
The company spent two years travelling for research. The audience sees them riding tigers in the distance and fearlessly crossing turbulent waterways before being carried on the wings of a mighty crane and landing in a garden in Lower Saxony where they started to learn the rules of Ramadan in 2017.
Markus&Markus use video recordings and elaborately speculative stories to document their research into the five pillars of Islam: from fasting through charity, prayer and faith to pilgrimage. From a mosque on the Starnberger See to breaking fast in Sarajevo, from the Young Islam Conference to the Mshatta palace near Amman in Jordan. They learned why mosques have crescent moons in the middle of Brandenburg countryside and see why not even seven pages of instructions on prayer can sum up the diversity of Islam as it is lived.
For Markus&Markus theatre is an opportunity to look at a set of themes not only from the outside but to look out from inside them. ZWISCHEN DEN SÄULEN (BETWEEN THE PILLARS) offers a sense of the challenges this approach brings with it. Might Markus&Markus even become Muslims? Their interlocutor laughs and says: “God decides whether someone becomes a Muslim or not! We can’t decide that ourselves.”

Markus&Markus is a theatre collective from Hildesheim. Lara-Joy Hamann holds everything together, both artistically and in terms of organisation. Katarina Eckold films all the videos and is responsible for designing the visuals. Markus Schäfer likes communicating, devising concepts and performing. Markus Wenzel, who tends to work away silently by himself, writes the odd text and also performs. As Markus&Markus all four of them have stood since 2011 for a form of documentary theatre that combines passionate investigation and a radical lack of perfection. The collective is not interested in representing reality but regards the theatre context as a decisive tool with which to grasp reality. Markus&Markus have been presented with the George Tabori Förderpreis and the Jury Prize at BEST OFF — Festival Freier Theater der Stiftung Niedersachsen.
