The city theater is turned into an underground car park. The playhouse becomes a shopping mall. What happens to theatres when no one wants theatre any more? In the course of three episodes the documentary film series ‘state-theatre’ – filmed in Detroit, Beirut and Mönchengladbach – shows theater buildings being converted or demolished and questions the use and impermanence of cultural and urban assembly spaces. In the foyer of the Depot, Schauspiel Köln’s longtime place of exile and one of the main venues for this year’s Impulse Theater Festival, the Berlin filmmakers Daniel Kötter and Constanze Fischbeck demonstrate how fragile the bond has become between many cities and the theater which still regards itself as a synonym for the whole of society.
