Silent University

The present “refugee crisis” has instantly made the issue of migration a widely-discussed theme. In the art world the number of related works have also drastically increased – though not every good intention leads to an enduring and substantial initiative. Last year the Impulse Theater Festival, together with Ringlokschuppen Ruhr and Urbane Künste Ruhr, originated a branch of the Silent University initiated by the Kurdish artist Ahmet Öğüt in 2012; an autonomous knowledge platform whose teachers are refugee academics who are unable to pass on their knowledge here – because they lack work permits, their qualifications are not recognized or for other reasons. To coincide with this year’s festival we now publish a first book on the Silent University, with essays and interviews on the lost knowledge of refugees, critical or radical approaches to new pedagogy and reports from the Silent Universities which currently exist in Amman, Athens, Hamburg, London, Mülheim / Ruhr and Stockholm. In a collective discussion to launch the book, representatives of the different branches report on the situations in their cities and their successes and failures in establishing the Silent University.
