Educational trips

A traveling discourse program

In former times, the sons, and sometimes the daughters of the nobility and the upper classes went on grand journeys. To cap off their education, they spent months or even years on a journey, they got to know other countries, other customs, and they came back more mature in character. This noble gesture might be lost – but extended backpack trips during semester breaks and cultural tourism are a reverberation of this tradition. But while discount airlines jet all over the world, the immediate surroundings often remain uncharted territory.
Impulse Theater Biennale 2013 is throwing itself into the fray, trying to fill the gap by connecting its performance cities on the Rhine and the Ruhr with its own educational journeys. Each of the four locations has a special day in the festival program – reachable by bus and combi-ticket.
Not only does this give you a condensed overview of what notable independent theater works have emerged in the last two years in the German-speaking world. But each bus also has its own tour guide: lectures, analyses, performative talks – about the role of migration
in NRW, about the question of German thought, about xenophobia, and also about the way that pop music contributes to the formation of identity.
Anyone who wants to hear has to travel – this time the festival’s theory program is taking place on the street.
