Schubladen

She She Pop (DE)

Almost a quarter century after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, members of She She Pop (all of whom grew up in West Germany) meet some other women from their generation who were socialized in the East, and they get closer to each other by opening up their drawers of memory: letters, diaries, notes are arranged, as is their internal archive of images. And of course music, the first record, the favorite love song. Private pop experiences against the backdrop of great political events. Stories about their lives are grouped and mixed up again, and the soundtrack of the time runs throughout. The questions asked by the others must be answered to the best of one’s knowledge and in good conscience – without turning to the reliable sources to fill in the gaps in memory.
A multi-voiced and deeply subjective chronicle of East-West German history is rolled out, fortified by private or publicly accessible documents, reported from memory, in agreement with or counter to the tide of events.
Reunification in “Schubladen” is conceived as working on a relationship, after the fact and live. For these three East-West couples, it is as a concrete task in the here and now of the stage. Who are you? How did you become the woman who is now sitting across from me?
Like in every relationship, good or bad, misunderstandings and projections play an important role. She She Pop and their colleagues from the East profess to a diversity of voices, to collective narration. The gaps, imprecision, and missing connections are all part of the system. Who were we? Who are we? Why did we turn out this way?
