Bedingungsloses Grundeinsingen

Bernadette La Hengst (DE)

CHORISCHES COACHING

Premiere of the Impulse-version
Coproduction

Bernadette La Hengst and her chorus are celebrating a realistic utopia with the audience. For five years, as part of a European pilot project, an unconditional base income (bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen, bGE) of 1000 Euro a month has been paid to several German people. Now, in preparation for the anniversary celebrations, the bGE recipients are taking stock of their personal experiences, as well as the larger social consequences of this fundamental change in the social state, one which is being called for by more and more economic experts and political organizations.
To do so, they have founded the Chorus of Unconditional Base Warm-Up Singing (Chor des bedingungslosen Grundeinsingens), for collective singing is the only condition that they have unconditionally agreed to in their new life. The chorus, made up of the unemployed, workaholics, (single) parents, cleaning workers, young slackers, artists, and exhausted mangers, forms its own musical-discursive society. Here, the advantages of the base income are not homogenously proclaimed, they are controversially ’disco-ssed’ from various perspectives.

“Unconditional Base Warm-Up Singing” is a choral coaching session for everyone who is unemployed, who is unsatisfied with their work, who earns too little or too much money, who has too little or too much time to do pointless things, who is overworked or who suffers from isolation, alienation, or burnout. Here, the wishes, dreams, and visions about what might change because of an unconditional base income are no faraway utopia, but a reality in the present.

For Impulse Theater Biennale 2013, Bernadette La Hengst is preparing a special version of the “Unconditional Base Warm-Up Singing” in collaboration with the citizens of Bochum.
