Nebenschauplätze Nr.1:
Das 20. Jahrhundert

Hofmann&Lindholm (DE)

RE-ENACTMENT FLÜCHTIGER ERSCHEINUNGEN

The sun comes up, the sun goes down. In between light falls through the window and history happens. We see the shadows – not the big, famous moments of great women and men, not Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, not Kennedy’s death in an open car. But the dog Laika in the lab, days before she has to write history with her trip into space, even though no one asked her. We see Hitler making a far-reaching decision while watching Eisenstein’s “Potemkin.” We see John Lennon on a ladder and Freud’s Anna O. as an older woman. Days of the 20th century.
The Cologne-based performance and director duo Hofmann&Lindholm takes off on new aesthetic paths, projecting the shadows of the past with a love for meticulous detail and gentle humor. Like a crisply drawn Comic Noir, the images travel over the walls of the space; like in Plato’s Cave Allegory we see only the projection of what’s happening. They are the ghosts of history. A play of memory, a work of memory, a theater of memory.
In a silhouette-like history-séance in the form of a rigid revue of numbers, Hofmann&Lindholm manage to take possession of what’s indigestible about the 20th century, at least for a few moments. By means of the marginal, the supposedly incidental, they cast a light on the undervalued, which barely survived, but nonetheless has had far-reaching effect or is at least symbolically instructive.
Surprisingly and evidently, the shadow cinema maneuvers us with determination into the off spaces – “ Nebenschauplätze Nr. 1” is a chamber piece of fleeting apparitions, in which the theater is played away and commented on as a space of memory and as an obscuring enlightenment.
