How to occupy an imaginary space within an imaginary context?
andcompany&Co., for years now the designated experts in joyfully juggling political discourse, occupy the Cologne studiobühne together with Flemish and Dutch colleagues, and rehearse the insurrection. For while the Dutch Geuzen were revolting against their Spanish oppressors almost 450 years ago, the Germans preferred to write plays about it, even years afterwards – for example, Goethe’s “Egmont” and Schiller’s “Don Carlos”: “Sir, give us the freedom to think!”
In collaboration with the Flemish director Joachim Robbrecht, andcompany&Co. call for a temporary transnational theater, interweaving current polemical pamphlets like “The Coming Insurrection” by The Invisible Committee with Schiller’s “History of the Revolt of the Netherlands” into an associative tour de force that leads from the Thirty Year War to the “Occupy Movement of 1940” and on to the New York occupiers of Zuccotti Park a year and a half ago.
Without any particular chronological order and undaunted by corny jokes and short circuitings, they conjure up the history of that freedom that was born a long time ago in the Netherlands and which is today being carried to its grave there as well. In historical costumes from past revolutions, the actors walk onto the stage that they are occupying: the Geuzen, the beggars are back! But this time it is not only Spain’s ruling lady that has to fear them, but all of Europe, for what began as a farce could end as a tragedy.
